Congratulations to Spring Grove Area High School teachers Joseph Sokolovich and Josh Richard for being awarded a York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) Innovation Grant presented by RHI Magnesita for $950!

The YCAL Innovation Grants allow the opportunity to fund innovative projects that support its mission to engage students in career exploration and development. Ideal grants are for a pilot project that promotes one or more of the four PA Career Standards and includes some form of collaboration with a local business partner. Joseph Sokolovich and Josh Richard's grant proposal, "Pen Lathes, Turning Successful Students," is in partnership with Ivan C. Dutterer, Inc.

As a result of the grant, mini lathes will be purchased and installed in the woodworking lab so that students can learn the art of wood turning. Students will make wooden pens and other items that can be sold at the high school craft fair and/or other places. The school will partner with local woodworking company, Ivan C. Dutterer, Inc., to acquire scrap materials not typically found in a high school that can be turned into profitable items.

After learning the safe operations of a mini lathe, students will make small items from available scrap wood, learning how to make products worth selling to the public. Students will have an opportunity to travel to Ivan C. Dutterer, Inc. for a tour of a professional woodworking facility where they can learn about available careers in the area.

Thank you, York County Alliance for Learning and RHI Magnesita, for this opportunity!
