Select Modern Band Writes & Releases Song Dedicated to Class of 2021
Graduation is always a special time for students and staff. Even more so this year as it was the first time a rock band, made up of mostly senior students, performed their very own written and arranged song dedicated to the Class of 2021 at a Spring Grove Area High School Commencement Ceremony. The Spring Grove Area High School rock band was made possible through a new music course at the High School called “Select Modern Band.”
The rock band is made up of 2021 graduates Brylan Anderson, Bailey Klinedinst, Brendan Livelsberger, Madison McIntyre, Trinae Payton, Bailey Phillips, Riley Phillips, Peyton Rohrbaugh, Jessica Wivell, and junior student Edie Rumbaugh. This talented group has worked since the fall to write, compose, and arrange their very own song, “Soar”, that they dedicated to the Class of 2021. They performed the song live during the Commencement Ceremony on May 27th.
The students did not stop with only the writing and composing of the song. They also had the opportunity to record and produce the song with a professional sound mixer AND they started a record label for the High School called Papertown Records. Their song, “Soar”, will be released through Papertown Records in June to major music streaming services like Spotify, iTunes, and Amazon Music.
Dan Brenner, the Select Modern Band Music Teacher, said the “...students had an authentic approach to building a band from the ground up. They made decisions as a group in a democratic fashion. They set up their equipment together, they rehearsed, they wrote together, they performed, they recorded. They accomplished all of their goals in less than 60 hours of classroom instruction/rehearsal time. AND… they accomplished this in the middle of COVID-19. I am absolutely in awe of them.”
