SGI Students Shine in National Writing Contest
Three sixth grade students at Spring Grove Area Intermediate School Students have received exciting recognition for their creative writing skills in the Young Writers’ Scary Tales contest. They were challenged to write a mini-saga in 100 words. All three entries that were submitted by Olivia Baker, Catherine Rafferty, and Rowan Tracy, students in Mrs. Angela Saylor's class, have been selected for publication in the upcoming anthology, "Scary Tales - In The Shadows".
In a letter addressed to Mrs. Saylor, the contest organizers praised the students’ exceptional creativity and writing abilities, noting how the competition captured their imaginations. The selected mini-sagas impressed the judges with their originality and storytelling, making them a perfect fit for the anthology.
To celebrate this achievement, each student received a certificate and a commemorative bookmark. The publication of their work not only highlights their talents but also boosts their confidence by showcasing their writing to a wider audience.
Young Writers, the organization behind the contest, aims to inspire a passion for writing and provide students with opportunities to see their work in print. Having all three entries submitted from SGI chosen for publication is a rare and remarkable accomplishment.
Congratulations to these talented young authors for their outstanding achievement!

MY GRANDMOTHER'S SECRET by Olivia Baker
My grandma had always been strange. While my parents were on their anniversary trip, I was left with Grammy Evangeline.
I was poking around in her room, looking for a book to read. I found one. It was old and had a wand on the cover. I picked it up and flitted through pages of spells.
Suddenly, a dagger flew by me. I turned around to see my Grandma. She threw three more, pinning me to the wall by my clothes. I looked at my Grandma's decaying face.
Her zombie-like eyes would be the last thing I'd ever see.
THE MUSEUM by Catherine Rafferty
My friend and I had a history project to do. We decided on going to a museum because it has so much to learn about. We arrived at the museum, but were shocked because it didn't look right. We went in, and it was dark and creepy. The door automatically shut behind us, and we heard a cackle. We started walking forward, but then stopped when we felt rubber gloves on our shoulders. We were so scared we didn't move, and the scientist said, "Look what we have here." The last thing I noticed was him pouring a potion!
THE HOUSE by Rowan Tracy
Sally, Edward, and Mike went to trick or treat. They went house to house filling their candy buckets, when a random kid told them not to go to the spooky house on the corner because a witch lived there. They thought it was a joke, so they walked to the house, and it did look spooky. They saw crows, graves, and a sign that said, 'treats' so they walked up to the front door and knocked. Then it opened slowly and there stood a nice lady with a bowl of candy in her arms and she said, “Hello there!”
