SGI Student Olivia Baker Recognized Again in National Writing Contest

Spring Grove Area Intermediate School sixth grade student Olivia Baker, has once again demonstrated her exceptional talent for storytelling. Olivia’s 100-word saga, “The Bunker Escape,” was selected for publication as part of the Young Writers’ “Fight or Flight” Creative Writing Contest.

The contest challenged young authors across the country to write thrilling mini sagas—stories told in just 100 words—centered on moments of decision and the consequences of choice. Whether inspired by real-life experiences or imagined worlds, students were encouraged to explore whether their characters would flee or fight in the face of conflict.

Olivia’s entry, “The Bunker Escape”, is a powerful and suspenseful piece set during World War II. With vivid imagery and emotional intensity, she captured a moment of life-or-death decision-making during a bombing raid. Her compelling saga stood out among thousands of submissions, earning her another spot in the published anthology.

THE BUNKER ESCAPE by Olivia Baker

1939. Nazi planes circled overhead, and as the belly of a silver one opened, a glint of metal told me it was a bomb. Spikes of ice dropped down my back. I clambered down into the bunker, but it was too late. Boom! The force of the explosion rattled my teeth, and my friend Alice got hit with a flying piece of shrapnel. Her unconscious body was as lifeless as a ragdoll, and Nazis were approaching. I could save myself, or try to drag Alice to safety. Yes. I grabbed Alice’s wrist and dove for cover, hoping for a miracle.
