Senior's Conservation Project Enhances New Community Park

Spring Grove Area High School senior Philip Calder recently achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout through Troop 94 in Dover. The Eagle Scout Award is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America, representing a significant milestone in leadership, service, and personal development. To earn the rank, a Scout must complete 21 merit badges and demonstrate Scout Spirit, service, and leadership, including planning, organizing, and executing an extensive service project.

Philip’s Eagle Scout project, titled “Birds, Bats & Beautification,” focused on enhancing the natural ecosystem of 6.7 Acre Park, a new community green space located across from the SGASD administrative offices.

Working in partnership with the Spring Grove Regional Parks & Recreation/YMCA of the Roses and the Borough of Spring Grove, Philip led an initiative to install bird and bat boxes throughout the park. These habitats support native wildlife by increasing bird populations and offering safe roosting sites for bats, both of which aid in natural insect control and promote ecological balance.

Philip’s efforts align with the broader goals of the 6.7 Acre Park project, which is designed to be a sustainable and welcoming outdoor space for the community. The park will feature a scenic walking path, over 270 newly planted trees, a wildflower meadow, seating areas, and open green spaces for recreation and relaxation.

This meaningful project reflects Philip’s commitment to conservation and community service while adding lasting value to a park that promotes environmental health and community well-being.

We’re proud of Philip’s accomplishment and grateful to Troop 94 in Dover for supporting this important contribution to our community.
