Math in Action

Students in Spring Grove Area High School's Applied Trades Mathematics course recently completed an 8-foot by 10-foot supply shed that will support the future Agriculture Department greenhouse.

Under the guidance of teacher Mr. Ben Neiderer, the project gave students the opportunity to apply algebra and geometry concepts through the construction process. From planning and measuring to framing and finishing, students experienced how mathematics is used in everyday careers such as construction, engineering, architecture, and design.

The completed shed will provide storage for supplies that will be used with the greenhouse, creating a lasting resource for future students.

This project was made possible through a partnership with Schmuck Lumber, which provided expert guidance throughout the construction process and generously supplied all building materials. The district extends a special thank you to Chris Watson, Vice President of Install Sales, for his support and expertise from start to finish.

Projects like this demonstrate the value of hands-on learning by helping students connect classroom concepts with real-world applications while creating something that will benefit students for years to come.
