Hands-On History...

Learning came to life in Ms. Jennifer Miranda’s United States History Pop Culture/American Military History class at Spring Grove Area High School during a hands-on Great Depression Food Day.

As part of their study of the Great Depression, students researched the economic hardships families faced during the 1930s and how those challenges shaped everyday life. A key focus was how families adapted mealtime by stretching ingredients, reducing waste, and making the most of what they had.

Students then selected and recreated authentic Depression-era recipes, including potato pancakes, cornbread, sausage and potato mash, and bacon roll-ups. The activity gave students a tangible way to connect historical events to real-life experiences, helping them better understand how national hardships affected daily life for American families.

Through research and hands-on learning, students gained a deeper appreciation for the resilience and creativity that defined the era.
