About Us

The Spring Grove Area School District is a community of approximately 500 caring and dedicated employees who work in partnership with our families, community, local organizations, and volunteers to support the academic and social-emotional growth of ALL our 3,800 Rocket learners. We are committed to providing a positive educational experience and challenging and motivating all students to attain their full potential in school and beyond.

With a commitment to academic excellence, the District provides a comprehensive, well-rounded education that prepares students for success in an ever-changing world. The District's innovative curriculum and highly qualified and passionate educators foster a love for learning and encourage critical thinking skills.

Learning Without Limits

Learning Without Limits is a method of learning that encourages students to not only absorb new information and knowledge but to learn how to find out more and how to learn more. The four tenets of Learning Without Limits are connecting with others, engaging in rigorous learning, owning the learning, and solving complex problems.

Engaging in Rigorous Learning

Rigor carries various meanings for various people. What is rigorous for one student can be downright impossible for another, or only somewhat challenging for yet another. This is where the individual teacher-student relationship is most important.

Working with your child, the teacher knows your child’s abilities and how best to challenge them without pressing. Students who are engaged in rigorous learning are excited about school; they are interested in what they are doing and feel like they belong in school. They get to show their learning in a variety of ways, and their hard work is recognized and celebrated, which makes them feel good about school, what they've learned, and themselves.

Owning the Learning

We have encouraged students to follow their interests and inspirations wherever they lead; whether it’s building rockets, arguing a mock trial, or writing a book. Students want to learn in their ‘best’ way, to be engaged, connected, and deeply involved in the process. Teachers and students can work together to develop questions and find the answers, instead of teachers holding all the information and lecturing.

Solving Complex Problems

The goal of teaching is to equip students to identify and solve problems in their academic work and life. This includes solving problems that are set for them (the kind of problem-solving we usually think of in school) and solving new problems that they define themselves, or the world creates for them; creating something new as the solution. In this case, "being able to think" means students can solve their own complex problems and work creatively to do so.

U.S. News Best High School Award

Spring Grove Area High School received the 2024-2025 U.S. News Best High School Award. SGAHS proudly ranks in the top 27% in the state and the top 28% in the nation.

Niche Best Schools Designation

Spring Grove Area School District was awarded the 2025 Niche Best Schools designation.

Best Community for Music Education

The SGASD Music Department has received the Best Communities for Music Education designation 11 years in a row from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

Distinguished Title I Schools

New Salem Elementary and Paradise Elementary Schools were named Distinguished Title I Schools by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (2019).

District Comprehensive Plan

The Comprehensive Plan addresses planning for continuous improvement of leadership, teaching, and learning to ensure all students have access to a world-class education that prepares them for college, career, and life. The Assistant Superintendent’s Office develops the Plan. District stakeholders, including leadership, board members, parents, staff, and community members, are involved in developing the Comprehensive Plan and creating a shared vision for student success.

Spring Grove Area School District’s 2022-2025 Comprehensive Plan has been submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for implementation. The plan was developed during the 2021-2022 school year. The District's mission, vision, and values were updated, and new district priorities and goals were set.

Priority #1: Support all students with flexible and customizable learning opportunities to enhance growth and achievement.

Goal 1: Develop a system, at each level, to assess and monitor student growth and achievement.
Goal 2: Increase opportunities, at all grade levels, for students to explore career opportunities and become better prepared for post-secondary life.

Priority #2: Identify and minimize barriers to student learning for all students.

Goal 1: Increase involvement of all stakeholders in all aspects of our school community at all levels, K-12.
Goal 2: Develop a continuum of supports (academic and social/emotional) for all students.

In light of the district annual survey results and our commitment to continuous improvement, the District leadership team has developed a 2023-2028 District Strategic Plan. This plan, in concert with the District Comprehensive Plan, will serve as a roadmap for our District, guiding us in our efforts to enhance the educational experiences for our students, provide a supportive environment for our staff, and strengthen our relationships with our Rocket families.

STRATEGIC GOAL #1 – Student Learning

Foster a dynamic and student-centered learning ecosystem that empowers students and educators alike and is driven by cohesive curriculum design, adaptive teaching practices, diverse learning avenues, and effective integration of technology, resulting in enriched educational experiences and outcomes.

Objective A: Establish cross-departmental and K – 12 collaborations to develop and maintain aligned curriculum maps, pacing guides, and assessment rubrics, fostering a cohesive learning journey throughout a student's educational path.
Objective B: Regularly review and update common instructional framework and curricular materials to incorporate current educational research and adapt to evolving learning needs.
Objective C: Cultivate an environment where students take ownership of their learning journey by setting personalized goals, monitoring progress, and reflecting on their achievements.
Objective D: Create diverse growth opportunities beyond traditional classroom settings, such as extracurricular activities, community projects, and internships, to provide holistic learning experiences that meet individual interests and strengths.
Objective E: Develop a comprehensive program, including marketing strategies, focused on re-enrolling charter and cyber school students and retaining current students.
Objective F: Implement targeted professional development programs to enhance staff members' understanding of the curriculum, teaching methodologies, and integration of interdisciplinary concepts.
Objective G: Initiate regular assessments of technology integration effectiveness, gathering feedback from students and staff and making necessary adjustments to optimize its impact on learning outcomes.

Enhance the overall well-being and effectiveness of the school community by fostering open communication, collaborative culture, technological advancement, professional growth, and holistic wellness among staff members.

Objective B: Establish systems to facilitate collaboration and sharing experiences to reinforce a sense of purpose, empathy, and unity among staff.
