Meet Mr. Howell
This is my 16th year of teaching and I am extremely excited to teach at New Salem Elementary School. I previously taught 4th grade at Paradise Elementary School for 8 years, and am grateful for the opportunity to reinvigorate my love of teaching.I was born and adopted from Japan. I grew up in the Poconos, but lived in Romania as a teen before making York County my permanent home. I graduated from Millersville University in 2007 with a degree in Elementary Education, and graduated with a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from McDaniel College.
My wife, Claire and I were married in the summer of 2008, and love living in Hanover. Claire teaches in the South Western School District. We have four girls, Kendall (15 - entering 11th grade), Kierra (10 - entering 5th grade), Kiersten (8 - entering 3rd grade), and Lilly (6 - entering kindergarten). Life is busy! These days, I am busy helping as a "Pit Dad" at Kendall's marching band competitions, and running my other daughters to dance class and soccer practice.
Growing up, my hobbies included baseball, volleyball, football, and swimming. I was part of the high school marching band, concert band, and orchestra, playing the clarinet. I competed on the swim team since elementary school. Currently, my hobbies are golfing, swimming, gardening and keeping up with the outside of our house, small projects inside the house, learning photography, and all the fun that comes with being a father. I am also a huge Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan!
My favorite subject to teach and learn is reading. I love to help students learn to love reading and push them to understand the meaning behind the words. Some of my favorite books to read include Hatchet, written by Gary Paulsen, Wonder, written by R.J. Palacio, and Number the Stars, written by Lois Lowry.
